Using your FSA or HSA on glasses and sunglasses
Which eyewear purchases are typically FSA and HSA eligible, from prescription glasses to sunglasses and readers, and how to make the most of year-end funds.

Every December people realize they have flexible spending money about to expire. Glasses are one of the most useful ways to spend it.
What is usually eligible
- Prescription eyeglasses, frames and lenses
- Prescription sunglasses, including polarized and progressive
- Lens upgrades on a prescription pair, such as anti-reflective coating or high-index material
- Reading glasses
What usually is not
Non-prescription fashion sunglasses are generally not eligible. Rules vary by plan, so check with your administrator if you are unsure.
Make it count
If you have been putting off a backup pair, a prescription sun pair, or a computer progressive, year-end funds are a good reason to finally do it. Bring your card and a current prescription and we will give you an itemized receipt.
Many FSA plans have a use-it-or-lose-it deadline at the end of the year, and the last weeks of December get busy. Come in early if you can.
